"I believe that the purest form of language is wordless, as in the case of instrumental music. Also, it is not hard to believe that human voice could be the purest form of music possible, is it? As a man and an artist, I trust and cherish femininity: in fact, it is no coincidence that I titled this piece A Shield-Maidens’ Choir.  

I imagined a time and a place when people communicated with an ancient - now lost - universal language, and distinctly heard a maternal chant of protection and self-affirmation, when all else was brutal war music.

I then heard the sound of a calm pride overcoming that of uncontrolled instinct and wrath, and perceived the solemn sound of motherhood giving birth to a new breed. Those mothers I heard singing were shield-maidens on the verge of engaging in a just fight against violence and oppression, and I simply entrusted that vision to the score."
