Following a series of acclaimed releases and collaborations, Frankfurt-based ambient composer Michael Schacht, better known as Metric System 1981, returns to Siril Records with a brand new six-track EP, The Quiet Things.
His musical journey has spanned from the cassette underground of the 1980s to the contemporary international ambient scene. Throughout the years, the music has been characterized by a deep sense of atmosphere, introspection and understated emotional depth. The Quiet Things continues this path while revealing some of the project's most personal work to date.
The EP opens with the elegant and nostalgic “From Stardust To Silence”, a piece that gently invites listeners into a world suspended between memory and reflection. Floating textures, delicate harmonies and a sense of quiet wonder set the tone for the journey ahead.
At the heart of the release lies its title track, “The Quiet Things”. Deeply personal to Schacht, the composition captures the beauty of life's unnoticed moments — emotions that often remain unspoken, memories that quietly accompany us through time, and the comfort found in stillness. With its subtle dynamics and intimate atmosphere, the track forms the emotional centerpiece of the EP.
The themes introduced in “The Quiet Things” are reflected and expanded in two companion pieces created together with Edoardo Gastaldi. Their collaboration has become a trusted and recurring partnership, blending evocative soundscapes with refined melodic sensitivity. The resulting tracks feel like mirror images of the EP’s central theme, exploring silence, memory and human connection from complementary perspectives.
Another key moment is “Silent Horizon”, a quintessential composition from the artist. Calm, spacious and deeply immersive, the track unfolds as a peaceful ambient landscape layered with tender piano melodies. It perfectly showcases the ability to create music that is both minimal and emotionally resonant, inviting listeners into a state of contemplation and serenity.
Gastaldi adds: “Being part of The Quiet Things EP and having the chance to collaborate once again with Michael is something I fill with value. Every piece of music that I compose is a fragment of my past, and together we were once again able to share that feeling, and to further enhance the need for stillness and mindfulness that is becoming more and more instinctual to human beings.”
With The Quiet Things, Metric System 1981 presents a collection of intimate ambient reflections that celebrate subtle beauty, emotional honesty and the power of silence. More than a series of compositions, these six pieces create a space for pause and reflection, encouraging listeners to slow down, embrace stillness and reconnect with the quiet moments that often hold the deepest meaning.
